Institutional investment veteran joins leading residential real estate investment firm’s advisory board to drive strategic initiatives, support growth, and expand investor network

NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. (September 18, 2024) – IHP Capital Partners (“IHP”), a leading national residential real estate investment manager, announces the appointment of Mitch Pleis, former co-head of real estate at the California State Teachers’ Retirement System (“CalSTRS”), to its advisory board. Pleis is a distinguished industry leader who recently retired from his senior leadership role at CalSTRS, one of the nation’s largest pension funds. He brings over four decades of institutional real estate investment management experience to IHP’s advisory board, adding to the firm’s preeminent level of expertise and incomparable institutional investment network.

“I am excited to join IHP Capital Partners’ esteemed advisory board, which includes some of the most respected leaders in residential real estate,” said Pleis. “IHP is well-positioned for continued growth, and I look forward to leveraging my institutional and real estate experience to help drive strategic initiatives and offer guidance.”

As a member of IHP’s advisory board, Pleis will play a pivotal role in shaping the company’s strategic direction and accelerating its growth. He will contribute to high-level decision-making at board meetings, guide financial strategy, and support project capitalization efforts. Leveraging his extensive real estate network, Pleis will also facilitate connections with key institutional investors. His expertise will be instrumental in strengthening IHP’s market presence and driving its continued success.

“Mitch Pleis is an outstanding addition to our advisory board, and we are excited to welcome him onto the IHP Capital Partners team,” said Richard Whiteley, Co-President at IHP Capital Partners. “Mitch’s deep industry knowledge, market insight, and strong network will have a profound impact on IHP’s future. His experience, particularly in aligning strategy with capital, makes him a perfect fit for our firm as we continue to grow and expand our investment portfolio.”

Pleis’ expertise spans real estate development, structured financing, and asset and portfolio management across a variety of property types nationwide. Throughout his career, Pleis held several positions at CalSTRS. As Director of Real Estate, he played a pivotal role in redesigning the pension fund’s real estate investment program, transforming the strategies used by investment managers. He also founded Pleis & Company, providing capital formation and consulting services to real estate operators. Additionally, he served as Managing Director at Principal Global Investors from 2003 to 2010, where he oversaw marketing, client relationships, portfolio management, and helped design new investment products and joint ventures, including those for student housing and retail development.

Pleis’s leadership experience also extends to academia, where, prior to rejoining CalSTRS, he served as the Athletic Director and Campus Development Director at William Jessup University, overseeing student housing projects and expanding the university’s sports programs.

Pleis graduated from Stanford University with a degree in Human Biology specializing in Urban Development and Planning.

“Pleis’s appointment reinforces IHP’s commitment to assembling top-tier talent to enhance the firm’s strategic vision and investment capabilities,” added Whiteley.
